Clinical psychologists work with individuals to promote well being and personal development through counseling.

A psychologist spends years training to treat with psychotherapy (talking to people, counseling them towards change), while a psychiatrist spends years training to treat with prescription medication. In a broad sense, psychologist are psycho-therapists, whereas psychiatrists are psycho-pharmacologists.

The main difference is the number of years spent in education and the depth of training. Most marriage/family counselors and social workers have earned a masters degree with 2 years of post-college training. Psychologists have earned a doctorate degree with 4-6 years of specialty training.
